Refurbishment of the southern railway from Sihanoukville Port to Samrong, Kampot province, is expected to be completed shortly. The 146km line will enable freight shipments by rail from Phnom Penh to Sihanoukville Port via the 118km Phnom Penh to Samrong link which opened in October 2010. Completion of work on the southern line will be followed by refurbishment of the northern railway line from Poipet on the border with Thailand to Phnom Penh (about 350km of which 48km are reconstructed), inclusive of 49 stations.
